Why do you need a WOD timer for your workouts?

Getting the timings right within a workout can be a challenge, particularly if you are just using an app on your phone. The lack of legibility can lead to missed intervals and sets, which are all going to knock you out of the flow state and impede the progress of your workouts. 

So what is the solution? Well, many CrossFit and general fitness enthusiasts have taken to external WOD timers as a way of timing the segments of their workouts, with a clear indication of sets and intervals. 

What is a WOD timer? 

WOD stands for Workout of the Day, a CrossFit term referring to a high-intensity workout performed on a particular day. This type of training often requires a clear and legible timer as the exercises are often performed in quick succession. 

WOD times expand what you can do within your workouts, making it easy to switch to different modes which give you flexibility over what you can perform. 

What types of exercises can be performed with a WOD timer? 

Good quality WOD timers can make all the difference in a variety of different CrossFit workouts. Some of the key ones include AMRAP workouts, For Time, EMOM and Tabata. 

AMRAP stands for as many reps as possible and is a type of training where the WOD timer runs down for a certain time and you perform as many reps as possible within the time period. 

EMOM stands for every minute on the minute, the WOD timer goes beeps, and this shows the length of one interval. This type of method is good for HIIT style workouts. 

WOD timers can also be used to structure good Tabata workouts, with work and rest times pencilled in to ensure you stay on track and meet the total amount of rounds set. 

Benefits of WOD timers

Many CrossFit gyms will have a stock of WOD timers but they are often highly sought after and with gyms open again many will be out of stock. This could make it difficult to properly time your CrossFit workouts.
